Registering births and movements in minutes, at TP & TR Rogers
Thomas Rogers and his brother Peter are the 3rd generation of farmers at Cornhill Cop, Herefordshire. The partnership is run under TP & TR Rogers farming at two sites, Cornhill Cop and Manor Farm. There are 400 cattle including 120 suckler cows, the rest are fatteners and followers. All animals are housed during the winter at Cornhill Cop and during the turnout period the cattle are out to graze on both holdings. There is also a mixed arable farm totalling just less than 700 acres split between cereals and grass.
Thomas Rogers explains “I looked at Cattle Manager software as cattle numbers on the farm were increasing and I was finding it more and more difficult to keep up with the legal requirements of registering passports and movements“.
Cattle Manager software from Farmplan is designed to help with the legislative recording and reporting processes of cattle. The software helps to simply access to management information for monitoring cattle performance.
Thomas Rogers spoke to a nearby farmer, Martin Barrett of Church House Farm before purchasing the software from Farmplan. Martin has been using Farmplan software for a number of years and runs a similar operation to the Rogers brothers. He explained how easy the software is to use and that all records are easy to access at any time.
Cattle Manager enables you to simply synchronise your system with BCMS to download existing animal details. Births and movements can then be automatically sent to BCMS whenever changes occur.
Thomas Rogers says “the introduction of the software went really smoothly. All the animals currently on farm can be downloaded from BCMS / CTS online instantly, making the setup of the system quick and painless. We regularly use the cross check to make sure the BCMS and Cattle Manager program are always agreeing“.
TP & TR Rogers have contemplated looking into electronic weigh scales. A Tru Test weigh head can work with Cattle Manager which can save time from manually entering the weights into the program as the weigh head automatically transfers the information for you.
Cattle Manager can reduce manual processes, duplication of effort and the chances of financial penalties.
Thomas says “the direct link with BCMS / CTS online runs so smoothly that we can register births and movements within minutes and we have piece of mind that when the validation result comes back we know everything has been accepted at their end“.
You can use Cattle Manager to quickly generate reports for inspection bodies such as DEFRA, Trading Standards and Farm Assurance.
“Using Cattle Manager has saved my brother and I a lot of written work such as filling in movement books, vet and med and even the use of BCMS online. I now spend less time in the office which is great for any farmer, this has got to be a good thing” claims Mr Rogers.
Whatever the size of farm or type of producer, Cattle Manager can be used to help you productively assess your herd performance and make sounds cattle management decisions.
Mr Rogers concludes “now I have been using the system I can honestly say the benefits of the software are huge. I really don’t think I could be without it“.
