Cattle Manager Go App, a valuable new management tool
Heather Whittaker, Coley Walks Farm
Coley Herefords are based just outside Halifax. Heather Whittaker started to produce Pedigree Herefords in 2004 on a purely grass based system, in a farming area surrounded by industrial West Yorkshire.
“We currently have a herd of 50 suckler cows plus followers and produce pure and registered pedigree animals for sale to Hereford breeders, dairy farms and commercial farms and in addition the remainder are either sold at market or privately for fattening.
“I have been using the Farmplan Cattle Manager since 2009 so have a relatively large detail of information on the data base held on the main computer and in Cloud-based storage.
“We started to use the new Cattle Manger Go App last year so that Andrew, my farm manager, can use the information held in the office whilst working in the field.
“The App holds all the individual animals’ details so it is easy for Andrew to access this information on his phone in the field without having to return to the office. A management or treatment decision can therefore be made without delay. I must admit that this has assisted us in the speed of day to – day work and in the accuracy or record keeping with the Herefords.”
There is the ability to collect information in the field – to record weights, medicine treatments and procedures at the actual time that they occur so reducing the potential for error in recording on a piece of paper which has consequently helped us to be more organised.
“It is all linked in with the pedigree details both on Farmplan and then to the Breedplan database through the Hereford Cattle Society so we are able to link in and look at additional pedigree information in the field.
“At the moment not all that is available on the Farmplan program is available on the App, but by using the facility of NOTES, additional animal details can be added to each animal so that when we have our morning meeting we are able to review these and decide the necessary course of action – we are only a small concern but it has benefitted us already in making record keeping for BCMS, HiHealth Herdcare cattle health scheme and Farm Assurance easier to monitor.
“Duplication is checked as the data base is Cloud based so we are not putting in erroneous information as it is checked at the time of update. Andrew is able to work in the field whilst I am using the office computer.
This keeps me up to date with what is happening in the field and assists me with the pedigree aspects of the Farmplan system.
“Farmplan are always looking at regular updates of the Cattle Manager software and have been instrumental in including those suggestions that I have made as a suckler and a pedigree beef breeder – the App is definitely what has been needed to move the Cattle manager software and its use forward into 2022.
“In summary the App is another valuable new management tool to assist in the running of a busy farm and to organise an increasingly internet and cloud based management system.”
